Iran and Iraq have signed a deal on exporting Iranian gas, the Shana news agency said on Wednesday.
"Tehran and Bagdad have signed a deal on exporting Iranian gas to the southern Iraqi city of Basra," the statement said.
According to the document, Iran will be delivering 25 million cubic metres of gas a day. The initial stage envisages gas daily supplies to Iraq at four million cubic metres. In the future, the contract envisions the hike in the daily gas export up to 35 million cubic metres.
In 2013, Iran and Iraq signed a deal over the exports of natural gas from South Pars energy hub to Baghdad. The project was long in the offing and faced a delay over what Hamid-Reza Araghi, the managing director of the National Iranian Gas Company, cited as security concerns resulting from the Islamic State terrorist group dangerous activities in Iraq.
Under the agreement, Iran will deliver gas to Iraq’s Sadr, Baghdad and al-Mansouryah power plants through a 270-kilometer pipeline.
